Ubuntu همچنین به معنای عبارت "من هستم ومن به خاطر ما بودن هستم" نیز می‌باشد.
توزیع لینوکس ubuntu بهاری را به دنیای نرم افرارها آورده است.چندی پیش مؤسسه Linux Word Expo از فرانکفورت آلمان جایزه "لینوکس رسانه جدید" را به ubuntu و مؤسس آن Mark shuttleWorth اهدا کرد.
Ubuntu یک سیستم عامل کاملا کدباز و رایگان مبتنی بر لینوکس می‌باشد که برای پشتیبانی از پردازنده‌های زیر ارائه می‌شود:
- PC X86
- PC64-bit AMD64
- PowerPC Apple iBook,iBook G4,G5
Ubuntu شامل بیش از 16000 قطعه نرم‌افزار است ولی هسته مخصوص نصب بر‌روی دسکتاپ آن را می‌توان بر روی یک CD رایت کرد.Ubuntu همه نرم افزار‌های استاندارد برای دسکتاپ را از برنامه‌های واژه پرداز و صفحه گسترده گرفته تا دسترسی به اینترنت ، وب سرور ، ایمیل ، ابزار‌های زبان‌های برنامه‌نویسی و حتی چندین بازی را شامل می‌شود.
